The 2011 United States Army Commemorative Coins

Founded in 1775, the United States Army has served this country well for 236 years. It has played a decisive role in protecting and defending freedom throughout our history and has consistently answered the call to serve the American people at home and abroad since the Revolutionary War. More than 30 million American men and women have served in the U.S. Army since its founding.

Public Law 110-450, the "United States Army Commemorative Coin Act of 2008," was passed by Congress and signed into law by President George W. Bush on December 1, 2008. It authorizes the Secretary of the Treasury to mint and issue $5 gold, $1 silver and half-dollar clad coins in recognition and celebration of the founding of the U.S. Army. As authorized, the United States Mint will produce gold, silver and clad coins in both proof and uncirculated qualities. This listing is for one half dollar clad proof coin only.

The act calls for the designs to be emblematic of the traditions, history and heritage of the U.S. Army and its role in American society from the Colonial period to today.

Surcharges in the amount of $35 for each gold coin, $10 for each silver coin and $5 for each clad coin sold are authorized by Congress to be paid by the United States Mint to the Army Historical Foundation to support the construction of the National Museum of the United States Army at Fort Belvoir, Virginia.
