IOM CONCORDE 2009 CUNI COIN CONCORDE SIDE

On 2 March, 1969, pilot Andre Turcat took Concorde on a flawless 27-minute maiden test flight. The flight marked the start of the supersonic era, and Concorde came to symbolise the best of British ingenuity.

Now, to mark the 40th anniversary of Concorde’s birth, the Isle of Man has released a spectacular new coin showing the sleek Concorde aircraft in fight, as well as symbols of the five nations where it made its most appearances:

1-Eiffel Tower, Paris, France

2- Big Ben, London, England

3- Statue of Liberty, New york City, USA

4- Christ Redeemer, Rio de Janeiro, Brazil

5- Bahrain World Trade Centre, Manama, Bahrain.

This is a coin that will be treasured by coin collectors, air travel enthusiasts, and anyone who flew on Concorde or witnessed it in flight.

Since 1976 British Airways' Concordes operated close to 50,000 flights, clocked up more than 140,000 flying hours and travelled some 140 million miles until on the 10th April 2003 British Airways announced that it's Concorde fleet was to retire that October.

A final week of farewell flights saw Concorde flights at low altitude with over 650 competition winners and 350 special guests as it’s final passengers.

On the evening of October 23, 2003, the Queen consented to the illumination of Windsor Castle, as Concorde's last ever west-bound commercial flight departed London, and flew overhead. This is an honour normally restricted to major state events and visiting dignitaries.
