This coin is much larger than both USA quarter (24.26 mm in diameter) and USA half dollar (30.61 mm in diameter). 

Maui, the second largest of the Hawaiian Islands has long been popular with tourists because of its gorgeous scenery, beautiful tropical beaches and numerous cultural activities. Each year, the Maui Chamber of Commerce issues a trade dollar that is good in trade at participating merchants throughout the island during the year that it is issued. Most of the coins are kept as souvenirs rather being turned in for redemption at the end of the year, which helps raise funds for educational projects on the island. Over the years the series has become increasing popular with collectors.

For 2011, the subject shown on the reverse is the Lionfish, a poisonous fish. In Hawaii, the Lionfish is called the nohu pinao, after the dragonfly. If you have ever watched a lionfish sail over a reef searching for food, this is a very apt description. In Hawaii, myth has it that eggs of some nohu will hatch into sharks!
