Maui, known as the Valley Isle, is the second largest of the Hawaiian Islands. Its gorgeous scenery, beautiful tropical beaches and numerous cultural activities, has long made it a popular destination with tourists. Each year, the Maui Chamber of Commerce issues a trade dollar. The 39mm copper-nickel token is good for one dollar at participating merchants throughout the island during the year it is issued. Most of the dollars are kept by tourists as souvenirs rather than being redeemed, which raises funds for educational projects on the island.
For 2001, the subjects shown on the reverse are a Humpback Whale, a bird, palm trees, and the rising sun. The reverse reads "MAUI, NO KA OI, 2001".
The obverse reads "One Maui Trade Dollar, The Valley Isle, Good for one dollar in trade at paricipating merchants during 2001".
The 2001 Maui trade dollar was the 10th anniversary medal from original issue.
This Hawaii Maui Trade Dollar makes a great collectible gift for yourself or someone you know.
