In compliance with the Law on the National Bank of Moldova no. 548 –XIII dated July 21, 1995, the Decision of the Government of the Republic of Moldova and the National Bank of Moldova “On minting jubilee and commemorative coins” no. 21 dated January 16, 2004 and with the Decision of the Council of Administration of the National Bank of Moldova no. 261 of October 13, 2004, the National Bank of Moldova issued on October 25, 2004, the commemorative coin “Metropolitan Dosoftei – 380 years from birth” as legal tender and for numismatic purpose.

There are only five hundred (500) pieces of this beautiful coin in existence worldwide!!!

This coin is the October 2004 issue of the distinguished and limited Moldova coin series known as:

The commemorative coins of 50 lei

Obverse:

• The Coat of Arms of the Republic of Moldova is placed in the central part;;
• The year of issuance “2004” is engraved in the upper part;
• The wording “50 LEI” is placed in the bottom part;
• The inscription “REPUBLICA MOLDOVA” in block letters follows the coin circumference.

Reverse:

• The effigy of Metropolitan Dosoftei holding a staff in the left hand and a cross in the right one, is placed in the central part;
• The inscription „MITROPOLITUL DOSOFTEI” in block letters is engraved in the upper part following the coin circumference;
• The years of life „1624-1693” are placed in the bottom part.

This coin comes in a clear circular protective capsule.  The capsule has superficial scratches but the coin inside is in original proof condition just as the day it came from the mint and is accompanied by its bi-fold Certificate of Authenticity from the National Bank of Moldova.

Originally, a metropolitan was a bishop of the Christian Church who resided in the chief city, or metropolis, of a civil province of the Roman Empire and, for ecclesiastical purposes, administered a territorial area coextensive with a civil province.

Metropolitan Dosoftei was a famous Bishop of Moldova and a man of many accomplishments and contributions to the religious and secular life of Romania.  He was

• the first great Romanian poet (Psalter Book in verses, 1673)
• great writer (Life and Death of the Saints, 4 volumes, 1682-1686)
• the first translator from the world theatre (drama Erofili, remained in manuscript)
• and the one who printed for the first time liturgical books in Moldova (Liturgy Book in 1679 and 1683, Molitvelnic in 1681)
