New 2013 Uncirculated Cupro Nickel £2 coin
Issued on behalf of the British Antarctic Territory
Issue: 50,000

Description:

Representing the Antarctic on the British Antarctic Territory’s official Coat of Arms, the Emperor Penguin is the perfect choice for this Uncirculated Cupro Nickel coin.

Issued on behalf of this incredible Territory, this beautiful collector’s coin features two Emperor Penguin chicks huddled together on the ice. And, with The British Antarctic Territory issuing only two or three limited edition coins per year, this is a great opportunity to own what may become one of the most popular Antarctic coins of all time.

The walk of the Penguins

The Emperor Penguin is the tallest and heaviest of all living penguin species and is found exclusively in Antarctica.  Best known for the journeys the adults make at the beginning of each Antarctic Winter, March and April sees mature Emperor Penguins travel to nesting areas, often walking 50-120km (31-75 miles) inland in temperatures as low as -40°C (-40°F).

The female penguin lays one egg in May or early June and this is then carefully transferred to the male who looks after the egg until it is hatched. The female Emperor Penguin returns any time after hatching up until 10 days afterwards and manages to find her mate amongst the hundreds of fathers by his call. She then takes over caring for the chick enabling the males to head for the sea to feed before returning 24 days later. This beautiful coin clearly details two tiny Emperor Penguin chicks with an adult Penguin in the background, perfectly recreating life in this amazing Territory.

BEAUTIFUL REEDED EDGE

The obverse of the coin carries an effigy of Her Majesty Queen Elizabeth II, by Ian Rank-Broadley FRBS. Ian Rank-Broadley is one of the foremost sculptors working today. His effigy of H.M. Queen Elizabeth II has appeared on all UK coinage since 1998 as well as on select coins from other countries.

This coin is 36.8 mm in diameter, much larger than both USA quarter (24.26 mm in diameter) and USA half dollar (30.61 mm in diameter).
